Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) is an additive used in the motor oil formulation to enhance the oil’s antiwear and antioxidant properties. The ZDDP compound also contains phosphorous, which is believed by some to reduce the functional life of the catalysts in automotive catalytic converters. Auto manufacturers are required to offer a 150,000-mile warranty on the catalytic converters of their vehicles. Most modern engines today employ roller camshafts due to their increased reliability and additional power output. Roller cams wear differently than flat tappets and, therefore, no longer require as much zinc to protect. A reduction of ZDDP subsequently leads to a reduction of phosphorous, which helps to extend the life of the expensive catalytic converter.
